Important Notes Regarding International Call Charges

1. Dialing Format

To make an international call, use the general format:

  • Using the Plus Sign (+):+[Country Code] [Area Code (if applicable)] [Phone Number]`
    • Example: Calling a mobile number in the US: +1 1234567890
    • The + sign replaces the international access code.
  • Using the International Access Code:[International Access Code] [Country Code] [Area Code (if applicable)] [Phone Number]
    • Most countries use 00 as the international access code.
    • Example: Calling a mobile number in the US from Vietnam: 00 1 1234567890
  • Note on Area Codes:
    • Mobile Phones: Generally do not require a city/area code.
    • Landlines (Fixed Phones): Require the city/area code after the country code.

2. Costs and Charges

  • International call rates are very high if you do not subscribe to special service packages.
  • Caller Pays Principle: The person making the international call will bear the costs according to their network provider’s regulations.
  • International Packages/Services: You should check and subscribe to International Direct Dialing (IDD) packages or low-cost calling services (VoIP) from your network provider (Viettel, VinaPhone, MobiFone, etc.) to save costs.
  • Internet Calling Apps (OTT): Using applications like WhatsApp, Viber, Zalo, Skype, Zoom, etc., to call over mobile data or Wi-Fi is the most economical way, often free (excluding data/Wi-Fi costs).
  • Charges for Receiving International Calls (when abroad):
    • If you are roaming (international roaming), you may have to pay a fee to receive calls, including international ones (depending on your roaming package).
    • If you are using a local SIM card and network in the destination country, receiving calls is usually free (like receiving domestic calls), but the person calling you from another country still pays the international rate.

3. Special Numbers (Premium Rate/Toll-Free)

  • Toll-Free Numbers (800 Codes): Numbers starting with 800 (or equivalent, e.g., +1 800-XXX-XXXX in the US) are usually free for callers within that country.
  • Premium Rate Numbers: Service numbers starting with 900 (or equivalent) have very high charges and are often not accessible from abroad or will incur extremely high international rates. Always check carefully before calling these numbers.
