Vietnam is about to have 10 Gbps Internet network
Nokia is a big name in 5G network deployment. Recently, Nokia is planning to deploy a 10Gbps broadband network to 10,000 households and businesses in some provinces and cities.
Accordingly, Nokia said it has cooperated with VNPT to deploy the first 10Gbps fiber optic broadband infrastructure in Vietnam. The company will provide optical access nodes for the switchboard and optical modems to connect to the end user’s home. With the new technology, the network operator can fully deploy speed options on the current infrastructure without having to install new fiber optic cables.
The initial phase will connect 10,000 households and businesses in the 8 largest provinces and cities in the country. However, the detailed plan has not been announced.
Mr. Dang Anh Son, General Director of VNPT-Net, said that the project is the carrier’s first step in the process of providing high-end FTTx services, in the context of increasing demand for bandwidth at home or business.
According to Nokia representative, the solution that the company provides includes the main components of the 7360-FX Lightspan node and the Quillion chipset. In which, the 7360-FX Lightspan is a high-capacity access node, intended for large-scale fiber optic deployment projects and located at telecommunications switchboards, capable of connecting thousands of users through fiber optic environments. Meanwhile, the Quillion chipset is capable of supporting many different passive optical network (PON) technologies and allowing the technologies to operate on the same fiber, while power consumption is reduced by 50% compared to previous generation chipsets.
When the 10 Gbps network is deployed, this will be the highest speed that the Internet in Vietnam can achieve. This position currently belongs to FPT Telecom after the network operator provided a 1 Gbps bandwidth package at the beginning of the year. Although the bandwidth is large, the network operator said that the actual speed depends on the limitations of the terminal device.
Vietnam aims to have 84% of households using fiber optic cable in 2023. By the end of the first quarter, the rate of households using fiber optic cable reached 75.36%, an increase of 6.46% over the same period last year. According to statistics from Speedtest, the fixed broadband Internet speed in Vietnam in April was 92.51 Mbps, ranking 41st in the world.
